By 2027, it’s estimated that 43% of job tasks globally will be automated—potentially displacing 83 million jobs in routine roles, even as new AI‑driven opportunities emerge. ISI

3. Investing in Growth – Not Just Fighting Back

To reap AI’s upside, South Africa must prioritize:

• Digital infrastructure (data centers, connectivity, AI-ready hardware)

• Reskilling programs to empower the workforce for new roles

• Local AI innovation, from research institutions to startups

• Strategic public–private collaboration to leverage AI for national advantages ISI

4. Bold, Homegrown AI Strategies Needed

Beyond basic initiatives, South Africa could lead through:

• A national AI education platform, offering free, accessible learning.

• A public data repository for researchers and developers to build local solutions.

• A national AI venture fund boosting startups solving uniquely South African problems. ISI

5. Building on What Exists—but Not Enough

The country has established institutions like the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) and the AI Institute of South Africa (AIISA). Plus, a national AI Policy Framework outlines goals for talent, regulation, and AI adoption. Yet, these frameworks lack execution-ready programs for broader inclusion and innovation. ISI
